| Clinical Exposure Program
The ASP Clinical Exposure Program has been designed for medical
students passionate about a career in surgery. The program also
recognizes that the current curriculum of first and second year
medical students permits only for limited exposure to the surgical
specialties. Similarly, surgery rotations during the third and fourth
year represent only a few weeks of cumulative experience. This lack
of early opportunity to explore the field of surgery likely compounds
an already difficult decision-making process during the third and
fourth years of study when students must decide whether or not to
pursue a surgical residency. Furthermore, once this initial decision
is made the student must often decide between subspecialties such
as otolaryngology, orthopedics, and neurosurgery to name just a
few. By significantly increasing the number of learning opportunities
in surgery, the necessary training, and associated lifestyles of
numerous specialties, ASP hopes to empower its members with stronger
decision-making capabilities.
Through a schedule of diverse events, ASP plans to increase student
awareness for surgery and encourage a continued curiosity for all
the profession has to offer. The ASP Clinical Exposure Program features
the following activities:
1. ASP Procedure of the
Month
2. Surgical Grand Rounds
3. E*STAR Endosurgery Experience
4. Suture Clinics
5. O.R. Opportunity
6. Surgeon Supper
7. Physician Database
8. Research Connection
9. Aspiring Surgeon's Discussion
